The Weekend Wrap
Manchester Magic end league campaign with a 103-95 loss at Worthing Thunder on Saturday evening.
The Magic were without the services of Magic U18’s Michael Anumba and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo who were both in France for a Tournament and Kayin Darbey and Yannick Onifade who were unavailable for the game, it did mean a Senior debut for Adam Oldham.
All seven Magic players who made the long trip to the South Coast made telling contributions, Stefan Gill (34 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists and a steal), Richard Bell (21 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks), Lee Goldsbrough (12 points 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block), Donte Gittens (6 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals and a block), Ryan Lewis (8 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists), Hamad Ali (8 points, 4 rebounds and an assists) and Adam Oldham (6 points and a rebound).
Magic have now completed their NBL Division One Men League season finishing 8th with a 11-13 record. The Magic focus switches to the play-offs next weekend, where they face an away trip at number 1 seed, Loughborough Student Riders, in the quarter finals on Saturday 7th April at 2:00pm.
An under strength Manchester Mystics crash out of the WBBL Betty Codona Trophy after 84-70defeat at home to Sheffield Hatters on Saturday afternoon.
The Mystics needed to win by 5 or more points to advance to the Semi-Finals, so the loss sees Sheffield advance to the Semi-Finals next weekend. The Mystics were missing Captain Georgia Jones and Dominique Allen, who are both with the England Commonwealth Games Team over in Australia preparing for the start of competition next week. The Mystics kept pace with Hatters in the first quarter, but the depth of the Hatters shone through from the second period on-wards. The home side did close the gap from its widest of 24 to 14 at the end of the game.
The Mystics were led by Rheanne Bailey (20 points and 4 rebounds), with good contributions from Natalie Chaloner (19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals) and Lauren Thomas-Johnson (18 points and 7 rebounds) – Lauren and Natalie made the WBBL All-Star 5 for Week 23 coming off the bench. They had support from Isabel Bueriberi (5 points and 7 rebounds), Samantha Roscoe (4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks) and Charlotte Stoddart (4 points and 5 rebounds).
The Mystics now have three weeks off as the WBBL Trophy sees through to its conclusion. The next game for the Mystics will be on Friday 20th April at Leicester Riders at 5:00pm.
The Magic and Mystics junior teams are now in play-off mode, with four teams involved in action this coming weekend.
Trafford U18 face QE York Knights at home (Saturday 7th April at 1:00pm), Trafford U16 face John Leggott College Scunthorpe Wolves at home (Sunday 8th April at 12:30pm), Mystics U16 face Richmond Knights at home (Saturday 7th April at 3:30pm) and Mystics U14 face Ipswich also at home (Saturday 7th April at 1:00pm).

Tesco’s Bags of Help
Greater Manchester Community Basketball is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.
Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.
Greater Manchester Community Basketball is one of the groups on the shortlist.
Bags of Help offers community groups and projects across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags. The public will now vote in store during March and April on who should receive the £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awards.
