With just 50 days to go, the first crop of stand-out names in Britain have begun confirming their attendance ahead of the 2019 Müller British Athletics Championships on August 24-25 at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.
On the back of the long jump being one of the standout events of last year’s event, British record holder and multi-international medallist Shara Proctor (Rana Reider, Birchfield Harriers) will bid to win her first British title since 2015, with fellow eventer Jazmin Sawyers (Lance Brauman, City of Stoke) confirmed to join Proctor as she too bids to finish on top of the podium and seal automatic qualification ahead of Doha.
Last year’s competition saw European and Commonwealth medallist Sawyers sail out to a personal best of 6.86m to claim silver behind Lorraine Ugen, while five athletes surpassed 6.60m in a high-quality contest.
Two middle distance athletes who have started 2019 in phenomenal form having set personal bests across various distances, Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall, Dundee Hawkhill) and Sarah McDonald (David Harmer, Birchfield Harriers), are another duo set to toe the start-line in Birmingham aiming to book their places at the IAAF World Championships in September.
A 5,000m specialist who won European silver over the distance last summer in Berlin, McColgan has already set a highly-impressive time of 14:47.94 back in early June to position herself as favourite for the British title next month. A week later the Scot blitzed her way to a time of 4:00.97 over 1500m to go 9th on the British all-time list and surpass her Mother Liz’s best in the process.
Alongside setting lifetime best times over both 800m and 1500m in the past month, McDonald’s times of 2:00.15 – currently the quickest time by a European this year – and 4:01.50 respectively saw the Birchfield Harrier go inside both qualifying marks ahead of Doha, giving her much to think about regarding which distance to compete over – if not both – next month in Birmingham.
