England Athletics has named its team for the upcoming Manchester International event on 14 August, with Paralympic gold medallists Jonnie Peacock and Sophie Hahn among the athletes taking part.
Hosted at the Manchester Regional Arena in Sportcity, the event will see an England team compete against teams from Scotland, Northern Ireland & Ulster, Wales, BAL/UKWL (British Athletic League / UK Women’s League), GB Juniors and international athletes across a wealth of track and field disciplines.
2019 marks the first year that para athletes have been included in the line-up, with Peacock and Hahn competing in their respective 100m ambulant categories.
Also named in the team are North West athletes Jessica Taylor-Jemmett (4 x 100m / 4 x 400m), Andy Robertson (4 x 100m) and Abigail Irozuru (Long Jump). They’re joined by a number of athletes who competed at last year’s Commonwealth Games including Alicia Barrett (100m hurdles), Nathan Fox (Triple Jump) and Dan Bramble (Long Jump).
Now in its fourth year, the Manchester International acts as a gateway competition between regional club events and the Commonwealth Games, giving athletes the experience of competing in front of a big crowd against strong opposition.
With the England team comprised of familiar names and top up-and-coming athletes, the event is a great platform for athletes to hit form and impress England Athletics selectors with a home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
Chris Jones, England Athletics CEO added: “This is an event we look forward to every year and it’s great to see such a strong team selected. As well as for the athletes, Manchester International is fantastic for our network of coaches and volunteers whom for many, will be the biggest event they’ve ever been a part of. It promises to be a great family day out and we hope to see a strong attendance in Manchester.”
With the event taking place in the heart of the school holidays, tickets for the event have been priced at just £5 for adults and free admission for Under 16s and seniors. The aim is to attract families and the next generation of athletics supporters while creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere in the 6,000-capacity stadium.
