On day 2 of the Brasilia Grand Slam Amy Livesey (-63kg) and Gemma Howell (-70kg) both won bronze for British Judo.
Livesey defeated Ryanne Lima (BRA) in round 2 before narrowly missing out on a place in the semifinal following defeat by the Asian-Pacific Champion Junxia Yang (CHN).
In the Repechage Livesey defeated multiple Grand Slam medallist Daria Davydova (RUS) to set up a bronze medal match against the Rio Olympic 5th placed player and former Pan American Champion, Mariana Silva (BRA). It took Livesey a little over 90 seconds to defeat her opponent and win the bronze medal, her second career Grand Slam medal following bronze in Ekaterinburg in 2017.
Howell defeated Amanda Oliveira (BRA) and World number 10 and the 2017 World Championship silver medallist, Maria Perez (CUB), to win her Pool and progress to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, Howell was defeated in the semi-final by eventual gold medallist, Rio Olympic Games silver medallist and three time World Champion, Yuri Alvear (COL) and was progressed to the bronze medal match to face four time African Champion, Assmaa Niang (MAR).
In the bronze medal match Niang amassed three shido’s and was disqualified, handing Howell her second Grand Slam bronze medal after success in Baku earlier this year. Later today on the final day of competition, Natalie Powell (-78kg), Max Stewart (-90kg) and Frazer Chamberlain (-90kg) are all in action.
