The Weekend Wrap
Manchester Magic overcame the loss of American Donte Gittens to an ankle injury after less than four minutes to beat Derby Trailblazers on Saturday and secure a place in the National Trophy semi-finals.
In a scrappy contest at the Amaechi Basketball Centre, Kayin Darbey and Lee Goldsbrough stood out for the home side as they kept alive their hopes of a fourth successive Trophy title.
Darbey claimed 11 points, 11 assists and 6 steals, while Goldsbrough weighed in with 11 points and a staggering 20 rebounds.
Magic trailed 39-36 at half-time but took control of the game by taking the third quarter 24-15, eventually easing to a 75-64 win.
Michael Anumba top scored with 19 points, with Ryan Lewis adding a valuable 15. Hamad Ali also made it into double figures with 10 points.
Magic will now face Team Northumbria in the last four at the ABC on Sunday 28th January.
Manchester Mystics began their WBBL campaign with a fantastic 79-74 victory at Team Northumbria on Sunday.
Georgia Jones led the way for the visitors with 19 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds, with Dominique Allen adding 16 points.
Rheanne Bailey and new recruit Natalie Chaloner chipped in with 14 apiece as the Mystics, playing a smart game, finished strongly at Sport Central.
It was a mixed weekend for the club’s juniors in the National League, with only Magic U16s and Mystics U18s recording wins.
Magic U16s made it two victories from two games in Premier North by downing a combative Northamptonshire Titans 86-69, while Mystics U18s showed lots of grit and fight as they began their Premier North season with a 56-49 win over Myerscough College.
There was plenty of spirit on show, too, when Mystics U14’s second team took on an older Stockport Lapwings side at the ABC.
Despite giving away age and experience, the Mystics youngsters were only beaten 60-49 on their competitive debut.
Mystics U16s suffered a second successive loss to Premier rivals Nottingham Wildcats, this time going down 67-62 at home after losing by just two points the week before.
Magic U18s lost 81-70 at Team Birmingham Elite, while Trafford U16s, Magic’s second team, were beaten 112-66 at Mansfield Giants.
Manchester Magic’s Division Four side rounded off the weekend with a 79-39 home defeat to Newcastle Eagles U23s.
