Manchester Magic booked their place in the semi-finals of the National Cup with a 67-57 win over Team Newcastle University on Sunday.
Less than 24 hours after a home defeat to Hemel Storm in the National League, the Magic bounced back strongly, shooting out to a 16-0 lead thanks largely to three three-pointers from Stefan Gill.
Newcastle gradually pulled themselves back into the game, but the home side were always in control, with Gill finishing with 20 points.
There were important contributions, too, from Donte Gittens (10 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists), Lee Goldsbrough (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Hamad Ali (13 points).
Against Hemel, Gittens scored more than half Magic’s points in a 55-77 home reverse. The American finished with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks), with Goldsbrough (10 points and 8 rebounds) and Gill (11 points) also contributing.
Magic, who slip to fifth in Division One after suffering only their second league defeat of the season, travel to Team Northumbria on Saturday before hosting Worthing Thunder on Sunday (5pm).
Georgia Jones scored 24 points and Rheanne Bailey 16 as Manchester Mystics moved up to fourth in the WBBL with a 69-61 win at home to Oaklands on Saturday.
New recruit Samantha Roscoe also weighed in with 14 points and 9 rebounds as the Mystics recorded their fourth win of the league campaign.
The Mystics, who led 42-19 at halftime, next face Caledonia Pride in a WBBL Cup quarter-final at the National Basketball Performance Centre on Saturday (4pm).
Magic’s U18s and U16s moved smoothly into the quarter-finals of their respective National Cup competitions with comfortable wins at the weekend.
The U18s breezed past visitors Liverpool 118-48 on Saturday before the U16s swept aside West Brom 119-57 at Sandwell Academy on Sunday.
The U18s will face a home game against Myerscough College in the last eight, while the U16s will host Ipswich. Ties are due to be played on Sunday, 17 December.
In the National League, Trafford Magic U16s showed lots of spirit as they recorded two stunning comeback victories in Premier North.
They hit back from 13 points down to win 77-70 at Newcastle Eagles, before scoring 61 points in the second half to beat Sheffield Junior Sharks 104-94 at home.
There was also a 62-23 victory for the table-topping Mystics U16s over Premier opponents Brighton Cougars, while Magic U14s first team won 78-46 at Sheffield Junior Sharks in Premier North and the third team beat Stockport Falcons 2 67-44 at home in North West II.
Elsewhere, Magic’s Division Four side, Mystics U18s, Mystics U16s II, Mystics U14s II and Magic U14s II all lost but showed plenty of heart.
