David Sheepshanks CBE to Chair UK Community Foundations

UK Community Foundations has today announced the appointment of David Sheepshanks CBE as Chair, succeeding Matthew Bowcock who has retired after six years, having served the maximum two terms as an elected trustee.

David Sheepshanks said: “Matthew Bowcock deserves great credit and our sincere thanks as under his chairmanship Community Foundations have developed and grown to the extent that the number of people using us for their local giving has doubled every three years.

“I look forward to helping UK Community Foundations build on this success and, in particular, expanding public awareness of the extraordinary interventions that our 54 member Community Foundations across the land make to improve quality of life in their neighbourhoods. I believe that we are the natural partner for local giving, making it easy to identify and support the plethora of people working to address the needy causes that exist on all our back door steps, under the radar and most often under-funded. We have the expertise to connect the growing army of individuals and companies who want to contribute and make local citizenship visible to friends, colleagues and customers.

“I relish the opportunity to do what I can to encourage and support the unselfish efforts of staff, trustees and volunteers all over the UK. They have a deep knowledge and expertise in their territories and an ability to be exceptionally effective in the quality of their grant-making. However demand for our help is ever increasing, so we have much to do.”

David has held a number of high profile Board positions in business, sport and charity including Chairman of Ipswich Town Football Club; Chairman of the Football League; Chair of the newly opened St George’s Park (The National Football Centre) and FA Learning, the educational arm of The FA responsible for Coach Education and Professional Development. He is a Regional Chairman of Coutts in Suffolk and Norfolk; he was the Founder and first Chair of The Ipswich Town Charitable Trust and one of the founding Trustees for the Suffolk Community Foundation which he has chaired since 2005. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2004 by University of East Anglia for services to the community and made CBE in the last New Year’s Honours List for services to Football and Suffolk Charity.
