The British Olympic Association (BOA) is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It was formed in 1905 in the House of Commons, and at that time consisted of seven National Governing Body members from the following sports: fencing, life-saving, cycling, skating, rowing, athletics, rugby, football and archery. The BOA now includes as its members the thirty-three National Governing Bodies of each Olympic sport, both summer and winter.

Team GB athletes to switch on World Famous Regent Street Christmas Lights

London 2012 Olympic gold-medallists Helen Glover and Greg Rutherford are amongst 40 Olympic and Paralympic athletes who will take to the stage this evening to switch on the world famous Regent Street Christmas lights.

Continuing the celebration of London 2012 this year’s design features celebratory tributes to Team GB and ParalympicsGB along with a traditional display telling the story of the 12 days of Christmas. For  the first time ever the lights will be displayed along the full length of Regent Street, from north of Oxford Circus all the way down to Piccadilly Circus, before continuing south down Regent Street in St James’s.

Olympic rowing gold medallist Helen Glover said: ‘I’m honoured to have been asked to switch on the famous Regents Street Christmas lights – its means so much to be doing so alongside so many other fantastic athletes from Team GB and Paralympics GB.”

The festivities will kick off at 5.30pm with a choral performance of the ’12 days of Christmas’ before stars from the West End show Matilda will entertain the crowds. Regent Street’s media partner Classic FM will then welcome on stage a host of world-class talent, with presenters John Suchet and Jamie Crick introducing the likes of Tine Ting Helseth and The Masques. The acts will then be followed by a stunning performance by renowned opera singer, Noah Stewart. Team GB and ParalympicsGB will then join them on stage for the final gold moment of 2012 with a new display of the Regent Street Christmas lights.

This year Regent Street will be encouraging people to join in the fun both on the street and online. The public can engage in the conversation about this year’s Christmas Lights using hashtags #RegentStreet and #RegentStLights; users can also follow Regent Street on Twitter @RegentStOnline.
