We have been named National Governing Body of the year at the BT Sport Industry Awards 2016, in association with The Daily Telegraph. The announcement was made at an esteemed event in London (28th April 2016).
The prestigious award recognises sport governing bodies, or operators of a league or competition, which have significantly performed across three main areas: Leadership, Community and Performance. Judges looked at various criteria including an increase in participation and public interest in the sport, in addition to success on the field at elite, national and international level.
Gymnastics is thriving in the UK and the previous year has been a historic period for us with our top athletes achieving unprecedented results on the world stage and participation flourishing. In 2015, we staged what is widely acknowledged as the best World Championships ever, with new innovations, huge audience numbers, global coverage and historic medal success. The sport also witnessed its biggest increase in participation since the London Olympic year of 2012. Over 1.1 million monthly participants now take part in the sport, with over 300,000 affiliated with British Gymnastics. Investing in capacity to meet demand, we trained over 13,500 people in 2015 to deliver the sport around the country.
Chief Executive Officer, Jane Allen, said:
“We are thrilled. Being recognised is a huge compliment. A comprehensive strategy across the business has delivered unprecedented results for gymnastics in 2015. Of course this can only be achieved through the successes of our athletes and coaches, the fantastic gymnastics community, a dedicated workforce and our highly-valued, strategic partnerships with government agencies, home countries and commercial partners. We have great momentum as we head into the Rio Olympic Games and our next four year cycle, coupled with a strategic plan to create lasting success for gymnastics in the UK.”
