The Archery GB team selections for the European Youth Championships, which are being held in Bucharest from 18-23 July, have been announced. They are:
Cadets: Alyssia Tromans-Ansell, Eva Henderson Hirst, Eleanor Piper, Joe Fairburn, Ryan Pinder and Louis Perkins. Reserves: Lizzie Warner and Thomas Nairn.
Juniors: Sally Gilder, Rebecca Martin, Bryony Pitman, Patrick Huston, Thomas Howse and Jack Masefield. Reserve: Emily Bryant.
Cadets: James Howse, Adam Carpenter, Jake Walsh, Izzy Carpenter, Lucy Mason and Layla Annison. Reserves: Hollie Smith and a male to be announced.
Juniors: Rebecca Lennon, Abbie Spinks, Bayley Sargeant, Matthew Hall, James Howell and Luke Ralls. Reserves: Hollie Smith and Dean Hamilton.
The recurve team was chosen after a hard-fought selection shoot. The athletes showed both strength and depth with a series of shoot-offs. Many of them exceeded the points threshold to make them internationally competitive.
Performance Pathway Manager, Ceri Ann Davies said: “It’s an exciting team we have selected. In previous years we have seen many archers on the line focusing on maintaining their form. But this year was different.
“We saw a shift where athletes are more assured technically and free to focus on their mental game and importantly how to beat their opponent. This is a critical shift for GB’s future success, and very pleasing to see. Now we need to work on building these team combinations to put those mental points on the board when it matters.”
And selecting our compound archers proved equally difficult. Many of the athletes shot personal best scores in both qualification and match play, with decisions on who would be selected coming down to the very last matches.
Simon Scott, Archery GB-funded lead compound coach, said: “The team we have for this event is competitive at all levels in both team and individuals. We have several athletes capable of winning the individual titles.”
