Middlesex’s firing power put on a fierce display at Lord’s yesterday afternoon as big hitters Brendon McCullum, Eoin Morgan and John Simpson attempted to hit a cricket ball over the roof of the iconic Pavilion, to celebrate the start of the four Middlesex NatWest T20 Blast fixtures taking place at Lord’s this summer.
In preparation for their clash with Surrey at Lord’s tonight, the players attempted to replicate a feat first achieved by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)’s Albert Trott in an 1899 fixture against Australia. Trott’s hit off the bowling of Monty Noble soared over the roof of the Pavilion and landed in the garden of number six, Grove End Road.
Trott’s 118 year-old record remains intact but sixes rained down on the Pavilion roof and clattered into the upper balcony, with many going close to re-creating the extraordinary record.
Other NatWest T20 Blast stars to step up to the wicket to give the estimated 120-metre hit a go included: Tim Southee, James Fuller and Tom Helm.
Speaking afterwards Brendon McCullum commented: “We hit some massive sixes and although we didn’t quite replicate the hit over the Pavilion, this really shows the strength of our team. It proved to be great practice for our upcoming T20 Blast campaign and now we’re ready for the task against Surrey!”
Middlesex’s batsmen will now certainly be prepared to put on a show of big hitting cricket as they take on Surrey in tonight’s eagerly anticipated ‘London Derby’. While tickets for this evening’s clash with Surrey are sold out, there are three other opportunities this summer to catch a Thursday evening of exciting cricket action, with a cracking atmosphere to match, at one of London’s most iconic sporting venues.
With adult tickets just £20 and under-16s only £5, it’s a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an evening at the Home of Cricket.
