Lionsgate UK are delighted to announce new film Eddie the Eagle as the official film partner of Sport Relief 2016, which takes place Friday 18th – Sunday 20th March. The partnership has been formed to help Sport Relief raise as much money as possible for people living incredibly tough lives right here at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest communities.
Eddie the Eagle, based on the inspirational true story of ski jumper Michael ‘Eddie the Eagle’ Edwards and his quest to reach the Winter Olympics, is the perfect film partner for Sport Relief with the charity encouraging the public to get involved by signing up to the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games to do themselves proud. Nothing better encapsulates that message than the story of one man who defied the odds and united the country behind him during the 1988 Winter Olympics.
The film’s stars, Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, will be encouraging everyone across the country to ‘Do the Eagle’ to celebrate a victory – however big or small, personal or public. Based on the iconic ‘bird wing’ movement seen on screen that Eddie made his own during his competition days, everyone is encouraged to film themselves #dotheagle, share online and donate £3 to Sport Relief by texting ‘EAGLE’ to 70703*.
Sport Relief, with its aim of bringing the nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives, has raised over £262million since 2002. This year, the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games are back and will be taking place around the UK from Friday 18th – Sunday 20th March. Further fundraising initiatives on behalf of the film will be announced separately.
Eddie the Eagle, which is based on the inspirational true story of Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, stars Taron Egerton as the underdog hero and Hugh Jackman as his coach. Directed by Dexter Fletcher and produced by Matthew Vaughn, the film will land in cinemas across the UK & Ireland on 1st April 2016.
