More volunteers than ever before helped to make the 2018 Gymnastics British Championships a success.
Including judges, there were over 100 volunteers, with 41 individual event volunteers helping with gymnast and coach accreditation, handing out programmes to spectators, filming on the field of play and much more.
Geoff Grant, Volunteering Support and Development Manager at British Gymnastics said: “The British Championships is a fantastic gymnastics event and experience, and we aim to make it the same for our volunteer team. This year, as in previous years we had a large number of returning volunteers, a range of family groups and a very diverse team in terms of age, experience and backgrounds.
“What they all share is a passion for volunteering, and given Sunday’s competition took place on Mother’s Day, they all made significant sacrifices to support the event and help deliver a fantastic experience for all of those attending and taking part.
“For me, they are the stars and unsung heroes of this event and I would like to once again thank them for continuing to do something amazing with their time.”
To celebrate their hard work over the weekend, there was a Volunteer of the Day selected each day of the championships to reward those who continued to go the extra mile.
On Friday of the Championships, Strategic Lead for Volunteering at Sport England, Jenny Betteridge volunteered her time to be part of the army of volunteers helping to make the event successful.
Sport England play a vital role in volunteering across the country, from encouraging more people to volunteer in the sport sector, to providing further opportunities for those who already do so and Jenny was delighted to be part of the team for the day: “It was great. Event volunteering is very different in the sense that it’s a one-off, a real team effort and there’s a real great vibe that British Gymnastics have got.
“For anyone thinking about volunteering for British Gymnastics, I’d say you should definitely do it. Especially if you haven’t volunteered before, this is a really nice entry in to volunteering. It’s been a really good experience.”
