Leoben Schlussmann Lombes-Birkenheuer will probably not be forgotten so quickly in St. Pölten.
Handball Sportunion Leoben set an exclamation point in the HLA CHALLENGE Ost with a 29:27 home victory against the table leader Sportunion DIE FALKEN St. Pölten on Saturday and returned to the winning road. From the very beginning, the Leobners presented themselves highly concentrated and caught a dream start. After just a few minutes, the hosts were in the lead with 8:2. The defensive was compact, and the opportunities were consistently seized in the attack. The line proved to be a good move on Leoben’s right, where Dàniel Pinter started in the back room and Kovacech on the right wing. But St. Pölten could not be shaken off. Even before the break, the guests fought their way up goal after goal and shortened to 15:14.
Even after changing sides, the game remained on equal footing. Several times the SU DIE FALKEN St. Pölten managed to equalize, but Leoben showed nerve strength in the decisive moments – especially in outnumbered situations, the team defended disciplined and hardly allowed easy goals. A decisive factor for the success was, in addition to a running and aggressive cover this time, goalkeeper Adrian Lombes-Birkenheuer. With a variety of parades, including several free throws, he repeatedly brought the attackers of the guests to despair. Especially in the final phase, when St. Pölten put everything on one map, Lombes-Birkenheuer was on the spot and held the narrow lead. Guest coach Damir Djukic explicitly acknowledged the performance of the Leobner finalist:“We had thirty missions today. We didn’t know the Leoben goal, we’re generally struggling against big goalkeepers, and it was clearly the man-of-the-match for me today. My players played very well and I can’t blame them for the throwing selection either. Seen in this way, we have to continue like this and then we will be rewarded again in the next round.”

Congratulations to the team on this success.” Leoben’s final manAdrian Lombes-Birchheuer He also praised his frontmen, who gave him the necessary support: “We knew we had to win every game and today we managed! The last two laps we played a good cover in phases, but today we still put a shovel on it. That’s how it must be!”
