GB & NI TEAMS SELECTED FOR EUROPEAN 10,000M CUP

A men’s and women’s team will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2023 European 10,000m Cup in Pacé, France on Saturday 3 June 2023.

UK Athletics’ (UKA) objective for the Cup was to select the best teams possible to achieve medals; and to provide opportunities for athletes on the pathway to GB & NI representation at future major championships.

Some eligible athletes were not available for selection due to not expressing an interest and prioritising other race plans; however, six athletes have been selected to compete in France next month.

Abbie Donnelly (coach: Rob Lewis, club: Lincoln Wellington) and Hannah Irwin (James Thie, Cambridge & Coleridge), who were both members of the bronze-medal winning team from 2022, return to the competition once again, and will be joined by Rebecca Murray (Craig Winrow, Bedford & County) in the women’s race.

In the men’s team, Thomas George (Paul-de-Camps, Birchfield Harriers), Jack Gray (Mark Vile, Cambridge & Coleridge) and Matthew Leach (Dena Evans, Bedford & County) make up the GB & NI trio.

USA-based George ran a personal best of 28:06.26 in California earlier this season and joins Gray and Leach who were separated by just three seconds at the Night of 10,000m PBs on Saturday.

Tom Craggs, the Team Leader of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team, said, “I am pleased we are providing these athletes with this important development opportunity at the European 10,000m Cup. We’ve seen some excellent performances in the event so far in 2023, and I am confident these athletes will gain great experience against strong European competition in Pacé, so they can develop for future Championships.”

First ever cliff dives in rugged Guatemalan jungle ahead of 2023 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

Unspoilt diving locations across the Central American country allow current and former champions Rhiannan Iffland and Jonathan Paredes to experience the essence of the sport in preparation for the 2023 season opener in Boston, USA on June 3.

With the 2023 season start in sight, three World Series champions embarked on a 1500-kilometre cliff hunt from Guatemala’s Caribbean coast to the Atlantic Ocean. Australia’s Rhiannan Iffland, Jonathan Paredes from Mexico and the Colombian legend Orlando Duque joined forces to realise the first cliff dives in three pure and rugged locations across the country. The leaps of faith into a canyon, a volcano lake and between waterfalls will soon be swapped for stable platforms when these top athletes return to the sports-crazy city of Boston in less than two weeks for the kick-off of the new Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series season.

From the canyon of Rio Dulce carved out of limestone in the middle of the Guatemalan jungle to one of the world’s most beautiful lakes surrounded by three massive volcanoes, Lake Atitlán lies 1560m above sea level. The most challenging spot took the highly decorated cliff diving trio to the country’s tallest waterfalls at Los Amates in the so called “dry area”.

“This is definitely what cliff diving is about, it’s body and mind. This is you standing on a rock just looking down at the water, nothing artificial around. It’s just nature, we are working with it, everything connects,” Duque, former champion and now sports director of the World Series, raves about the adventure.

Iffland, Paredes and Duque – who have accumulated roughly 50 years of experience in diving from great heights between them – needed to repel in between two waterfalls. The landing area in the water was quite limited, but the water was deep enough, measuring up to a depth of four metres. The powerful water, the noise and the anxiety of a perfect dive made this spot special in many ways.

“We’ve checked everything on the safety list and now it’s just you doing your dives, having fun. It’s not about finding the highest cliff and the most difficult dive. We just connect with nature together as friends and explore the essence of cliff diving. It’s such a cool part of the sport.” 48-year-old Duque with all his experience opened the door for the other two divers with his debut dive from 19 metres.

“A difficult day in the office,” as 2017 World Series champion Paredes, who dealt with a mental block for most of the previous season, describes it; but at the same time an experience to remember for the rest of his life. “We spent more than seven hours there. Seeing Orlando’s face, seeing Rhi’s face, everyone was anxious. So, this moment for sure will be the highlight for me – it all looked very bad and yet in the end we made it.”

A great finish and a superb training opportunity especially for six-time World Series Champion Iffland before the start of the new season.

“The competitions are fast approaching, and I’ve been at home in the pool for the last couple of months training day in and day out and I really think it was very important for me to come here and just do the sport that I love. Do it without pressure but still put myself under pressure in my own way so I feel it’s fun,” explains the 31-year-old Australian.

In total, over six days the cliff hunter trio travelled 1300 km by car and over 200 km by boat through Guatemala to experience the diversity, richness and culture of this small Central American country.

From wild Guatemala, the athletes will travel to the US east coast for the first of six competitions to define the new champions in the men’s and the women’s competitions. This is where wildcard diver Paredes will begin his hunt for a permanent ticket in 2024 and record -holding champion Iffland will be chased by the likes of Canada’s Molly Carlson and Ellie Smart from the US – all three finished on the podium in Boston and in the overall ranking. GB & NI TEAM FINALISED FOR THE 2023 WORLD MOUNTAIN AND TRAIL RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad for the 2023 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships has been confirmed by UK Athletics, with a team of 33 heading to Innsbruck-Stubai in Austria between 7-10 June.

Several world and European medallists are among the strong British team selected for the Championships.

Rebecca Flaherty (coach: Karen Glerum, club: Bingley) – world silver medallist in the U20 up-and-down race last year – joins the junior women’s team in Austria, while Jon Albon (Isfjorden IL), who was announced last month, will compete in the men’s Short Trail race.

Individual 2022 European Off-Road Running Championships medallists Scout Adkin (Angela Mudge, Ambleside) and Eve Whitaker (Joanne Day & Jack Maitland, Harrogate) are also in the team, racing in the senior women’s and U20 women’s events respectively.

Adkin will go in the uphill only and up-and-down races at the Championships. She will be joined by Phillipa Williams (Dark Peak) in both races; the latter won bronze at the 2019 edition of the World Mountain Running Championships in the up-and-down race.

Whitaker won U20 silver at the Europeans and goes in the junior women’s up-and-down contest.

2019 European champion Jacob Adkin (Robbie Simpson, Keswick) will join Andrew Douglas (Sophie Dunnett, Inverclyde), Chris Richards (Duncan Richards, Helm Hill) and Joe Steward (Salford) in both the uphill only and up-and-down races; the same quartet selected after strong performances at the trials last weekend.

After victories at the recent Three Peaks race, Thomas Roach (self-coached, Lewes AC) and Cat Taylor (Black Coombe) have earned their maiden call-ups to the GB & NI team in the Short Trail race.

Team Leader, Anne Buckley, said, “After the successes on the world and European stage in 2022, we are delighted to be taking a strong team to Innsbruck-Stubai. After the competitive trial events recently, several major championship medallists are selected for the squad, and it is fantastic to also select some athletes to a GB & NI team for the very first time. They have all earned their spot and we look forward to seeing how they perform in Austria next month.”

Jimmy Murphy:- Honoured with a Statue – Ged Noonan

“People are easily forgotten. Statues are there forever.” In the case of Jimmy Murphy, the phrase could not be more apt. Seventy five years to the day after Jimmy Murphy led Manchester United out at Wembley for the 1958 FA Cup Final, a memorial was being unveiled at the stadium.

A part of the training facilities at the outpost of Carrington had been named after Jimmy Murphy but this wasn’t the level of respect this great man deserved. Most United supporters felt that a fitting tribute must be accessible to all the match day supporters. It has been too long in coming.

Due mainly to a collaboration between the various supporters organisations, initiated by Pat Burns, along with collaborations with the ex-players of Manchester United, this long overdue tribute was finally constructed and unveiled at Old Trafford on the 3rd May 2023.

A crowd of over 700 supporters, old and young, turned up at Old Trafford to pay their respect to a much loved and sometimes undervalued and underappreciated member of the club and its history.

There was a banner at the celebration that asked the question “Who will carry the flag?” alluding to the tragic disaster at Munich. It continued ‘Jimmy Murphy said “I will” with a tear in his eye’

In bright Manchester sunlight on a gorgeous afternoon, those present were treated initially to a rendition by Pete Martin of the song that has been fine tuned over the years as a tribute to Jimmy Murphy.

Sculptor Alan Herriot then explained the detail to attention that had to be undertaken so that the structure could be created.

With Jimmy now deceased, Alan had to work with a multitude of photographs taken from different angles, supplemented with details remembered by family members.

This included the ripped collar, replicated in the statue, along with Murphy’s clenched fist of defiance. Often forgotten is the fact that Murphy was a much in demand coach in his own right. Coaching the youth team to five successive trophies, led to approaches from Juventus and even Brazil, approaches that were eventually rebuffed by someone who wanted to stay where he was and continue the love affair at United .

Whilst there was the well known triumvirate of Best, Charlton and Law that led United towards the European Cup victory in 1968, the equally effective trio of Sir Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy and Walter Crickmer were just as potent in building teams over many years in order to get to Wembley in 68.

Some of the most electrifying commentary came from Jimmy Murphy Jr. who recited the time of a household having one phone. Youngsters with a mobile handset glued to their hand 24/7 will find that hard to contemplate. It constantly rang with support from other teams as Jimmy tried to find and field 11 players at a time when a squad was a fraction of those in the Premier League nowadays.

At the time, some people wanted United to take a season off in order to regroup and re-build, Jimmy was having none of that.

Jimmy Jnr. outlined how his mother, Winifred, was the rock of the family, unseen and happy to keep in the background. Yet she was the glue that kept Jimmy Murphy and their six offspring’s together, along with the millions who supported Manchester United.

The event was closed with a poem from Tony Walsh, aka Longfellow. In order to create his work, he sat with the family, listening to details in order to create a 10 minute long memorial that had the person next to me wiping the tears away.

As everybody disappeared away from the stadium with the sunlight on their back, we all reflected how wonderful and warm the occasion it was and how I was honoured to be in attendance.

Lions reach last four with win over Eagles

WBBL Play-Off, quarter-final

London Lions 86-37 Newcastle Eagles (26-8, 52-20, 70-32)

(Lions: Winterburn, 21; Battle, 15; Joseph, 13 — Eagles: Justinak/Lewis, 11; Fernandez, 5; Nolan, 4)

A strong start lifted the London Lions to an 86-37 win over the Newcastle Eagles in their WBBL Play-off, quarter-final match-up at Crystal Palace on Bank Holiday Monday.

Now without Kiki Herbert Harrigan due to WNBA training camp, the WBBL Championship winners were still clinical, especially in the open floor as they quickly established a double-digit lead and never looked back.

Holly Winterburn led the Lions with 21 points, shooting 41% from the field, with Ty Battle adding 15 on 6/9 shooting.

Maggie Justinak and Antionette Lewis both had 11 points for the Eagles.

From the opening tip, Newcastle attacked London, but the first few possessions produced basic turnovers, allowing the Lions to capitalise with two triples in the corner from Katsiaryna Snytsina along with a three in transition from Winterburn giving the hosts the advantage.

From outside to inside play as Shequila Joseph connected inside for a three-point play giving London a 18-6 lead with 2:58 left, and the gap grew further with 1:30 left, a fast break bucket from Chantel Charles handed the hosts a 23-8 cushion, forcing a Newcastle timeout.

And as is typical for the Lions all season long, a buzzer-beating long-range basket from Snytsina put her side in control, up 26-8 after one.

Like the male colleagues, the Eagles were able to get shots up and eventually got to double digits through free throws from Justinak and a jumper from Marina Fernandez narrowed the deficit.

And Fernandez was again at the heart of Newcastle’s offence as they enjoyed a positive spell of play, as she connected on her side’s first three-pointer in eight attempts, but through Winterburn, the champions led 37-15 with 4:31 in the half remaining.

Despite the pressure that the Eagles put on the Lions, the hosts were still able to shoot a solid 44% from the field, bettering the 23% from Newcastle as they took a 52-20 cushion at the half.

And London’s lead soared to 63-32 with 4:11 remaining as Battle got it done at both ends as her steal led the fast break where she finished inside off the feed from Joseph, en route to a comfortable 70-32 advantage.

From there, the Lions’ lead peaked at 51 points as they continued to push the ball and punish the Eagles in transition on their way to a victory.

Lions advance but were made to fight by Eagles

London Lions advanced to the BBL Play-off, semi-finals thanks to a 99-86 win over the Newcastle Eagles and 207-164 on aggregate at Crystal Palace on Bank Holiday Monday.

A win definitely the most important stat for the champions, but London were made to work hard in the second leg by a determined Eagles side, without Ben Mockford.

London will now get ready to face the Cheshire Phoenix in the semi-finals with Josh Sharma and Jordan Taylor pacing the winners with 18 points each.

Javion Hamlet led all scorers with 24 points for the Eagles with 16 of those coming from the foul line.

From the early going, London were in no mood to let Newcastle back into the tie as a couple of three-pointers from Tomislav Zubcic and Taylor, mixed with a dunk from the latter, handed the hosts a 15-5 advantage.

With the Eagles struggling to get their offence going, London found no issues at their end, with Miye Oni going down the lane for back-to-back dunks as the Lions found themselves 23-8 to the good with a little than three minutes left.

And despite Newcastle getting into a bit of rhythm towards the end of the first, thanks to eight points from Darius Defoe, London were unconscious from the field, shooting 13/17 from the field to lead 33-19 after one.

A monumental task ahead, but the Eagles battled and forced the champions into difficult shots. Even the introduction of Sam Dekker from injury didn’t deter them, as sublime link-up play between David Cohn feeding Justin Gordon narrowed the gap to 40-26 with 6:15 left.

A three-point play from Denzel Ubiaro and a tough floater from Hamlet continued the potent spell from the visitors as they swapped rushed, isolation basketball to patient team play, and it was working.

But the play was scrappy, with technical fouls being called left, right and centre, but come half-time, the Eagles had narrowed the gap on the day, but London were still comfortable overall, taking a 51-46 lead and a 35-point cushion on aggregate.

Showing some vulnerability in the second, London were keen to bounce back as they reverted back to their strengths of quick off-ball movement, ending with the open three in the corner as Vojtech Hruban connected by the Eagles bench followed by Taylor driving the lane for the easy two.

Hruban connected again from almost the same spot with 4:41 remaining in the third to put Lions 66-58 in front as the gap continued to grow.

But Newcastle continued to battle, reducing the deficit on the day to 75-71 but trailing by 34 over the two legs.

And Hamlet took it upon himself to shrink the gap to 78-77 with two minutes played in the fourth as London were guilty of missed opportunities when left open until Luke Nelson broke his scoring duck from the favoured corner for an 81-77 advantage.

They threatened, but Newcastle were never able to gain the advantage as London eventually pulled clear in the second leg to take a hard-fought win over the two ties.

KEELY HODGKINSON SET FOR LONDON STADIUM DEBUT THIS JULY

Keely Hodgkinson (coach: Trevor Painter, club: Leigh) will compete at the London Stadium for the very first time on Sunday 23 July 2023, having won medals at the Olympics, World and European Championships and Commonwealth Games since the event was last held in London.

The stadium will welcome the very best athletes from around the world in what will be the biggest one-day athletics spectacular of the year this summer, and Hodgkinson will line up in the women’s 800m as athletics returns to London. With tickets starting at just £23 for adults and £5 for juniors, this is your chance to see one of the leading stars of British athletics in action in the UK.

The reigning European indoor and outdoor champion was a prolific athlete on the Wanda Diamond League circuit last year, when she won three fixtures across the Series in Birmingham, Oslo and Eugene, and she will be seeking more of the same in 2023. MANCHESTER SET TO HOST 2023 UK ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS AND WORLD TRIALS

UK Athletics can confirm that the Manchester Regional Arena Track will host the UK Athletics Championships and World Trials this summer, with an action packed two days on the weekend of 8 -9 July.

More than 800 athletes are expected to compete at the event which will see athletes battle for both UK Championship titles and the potential for selection to the GB & NI team for the World Championships in Budapest later in the Summer.

The UK Athletics Championships is the pinnacle competition of domestic athletics in the country, and hundreds of athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators expected to be a part of the event which is being hosted at the Arena for the fourth consecutive year. The entire event will also be shown across the BBC’s multi-media platforms.

The event will contain some incredibly exciting line-ups with a host of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s medallists from both the Tokyo Olympic Games as well as last year’s hat trick of major Championships; the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.

UKA’s Strategic Lead for Major Events Cherry Alexander said:

The world’s top marathons based on the number of participants, prize money and Google search popularity

Running a Marathon is a one-of-a-kind experience – challenging, painful, and rewarding at the same time, but not reserved for professional athletes only. Unlike other prestigious sports events such as the Olympics, Marathons are open both to elite runners and to the masses. Many of these races take place in the Spring, attracting international audiences and participants from all over the World. The team at SportingPedia decided to compile a list of the world’s top 15 Marathons based on the number of participants, prize money for race winners and Google search popularity.

For this list, we looked at some of the oldest and most prestigious events, including the Athens Classic Marathon, the successor to the original Marathon that once occurred in Ancient Greece. We took the size of the race and the elite field into account, which is why we included the Abbott World Marathon Majors – the only exception being Tokyo, the youngest of the Marathons. The overall popularity of the event was also a key factor in putting together this list, so we analyzed Google searches in order to find out which are the most searched Marathons on the Internet.

100 DAYS TO GO UNTIL ATHLETICS RETURNS TO THE LONDON STADIUM WITH 33,000 TICKETS ALREADY SOLD

With 100 days to go until the athletics returns to the London Stadium for the first time since 2019, excitement is building as 33,000 tickets have already been sold for this prestigious fixture on Sunday 23 July 2023.

The stadium will welcome the very best athletes from around the world in what will be the biggest one-day athletics spectacular of the year. With tickets starting at just £23 for adults and £5 for juniors, join the amazing atmosphere in the capital to watch a host of Olympic and Paralympic medallists compete on the famous track which played host to ‘Super Saturday’ and ‘Thriller Thursday’.

The event will be the tenth stop in the Wanda Diamond League series, with athletes continuing their Road To The Final to become the Diamond Trophy winner later in the season.

The event has played host to several iconic moments at the London Stadium over the last ten years, including race victories for 2012 legends, Usain Bolt (JAM), Sir Mo Farah, Hannah Cockroft and Jonnie Peacock, as well as a world record for Kendra Harrison (USA) in the 100m hurdles in 2016.

Looking ahead, many of the stars of the GB & NI athletics team will be using the 2023 event to fine tune their preparations ahead of this Summer’s World Athletics Championships taking place in Budapest (19-27 August). It will also be a homecoming to remember for returning medallists from the World Para Athletics Championships taking place in Paris the week before (8-17 July).

Athletes who will be competing in London will be announced soon as we continue the countdown to the event, with details on a ‘legends’ relay also due to be announced in the coming weeks, so follow our channels for updates.

“It is amazing to see 33,000 tickets have already been sold for this the event as athletics returns to the London Stadium. It will be a spectacular one-day celebration of the sport, and the encouraging ticket sales so far show the UK public are hungry to see world-class athletics in the capital.

“Athletes always comment on how amazing the London crowd is, and how the atmosphere enhances their performance on the track or in the field, so if you haven’t already got a ticket, I urge you to get them and show your support for our athletes during this huge summer for the sport.

“We have seen world, British and other national records fall at this event over the last ten years, so we know the London Stadium creates a fantastic environment for athletes to thrive in, so we need you, the fans, to play your part and continue that momentum to make the 2023 event even more special.”
