UIPM INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST VIRTUAL LASER RUN COMPETITION

UIPM has introduced the world’s first virtual Laser Run competition in a bid to unite the global UIPM Sports community during the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

Registration is now open for #LaserHomeRun – a new concept that enables participants of all ages to add focus to their home training regimes, keep their skills sharp and enjoy the thrill of online competition.

Laser Run is UIPM’s fastest-growing development sport and the easiest to organise – a point that the governing body hopes to underline by exploring the popularity of a mass-participation virtual gathering.

The format of #LaserHomeRun is simple – in each round entrants must complete a series of exercises before hitting five targets with a laser pistol in the fastest possible time. UIPM Technical Officials will be appointed to make sure entries are valid.

There will be female and male categories across six age groups – from Under 11 to Masters 60+. Qualification rounds for up to 20 competitors will take place on May 4-5 and the finals will follow on May 7 – streamed live on UIPM TV.

UIPM Executive Board Member for Media, two-time Olympic medallist Andrejus Zadneprovskis, said: “The aim of #LaserHomeRun is to keep the global UIPM Sports community united, motivated and active during this difficult time in their lives.

“At a time when all UIPM Sports activity has been suspended, social media is playing an important role in enabling people to meet online, compare their home training activities with each other and have fun.
“We hope that #LaserHomeRun will be a nice extension of this – so I would encourage everybody to register today!”

UIPM 2020 PENTATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MOVED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

The flagship competition of the 2020 UIPM Modern Pentathlon season has been moved due to travel restrictions imposed following the Coronavirus outbreak in China.

The city of Xiamen (CHN), due to host the UIPM 2020 Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships from May 25-31, has accepted an offer from UIPM to stage the 2022 instalment instead. Minsk (BLR) had already been confirmed as host city in 2021.

The UIPM 2020 Pentathlon World Championships will now take place on the same dates in Cancún (MEX), ensuring that all the major competitions of the season will be held at sea level and providing a strong contingency solution for the final Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification event.
Cancún (MEX) will not host the UIPM 2020 Laser Run World Championships, which would have been combined with the Pentathlon World Championships in Xiamen (CHN).

Instead, the sixth running of the event will be combined with the UIPM 2020 Biathle/Triathle World Championships in Weiden (GER) in August.
There are currently no plans to relocate the UIPM 2020 Congress and Annual Awards, which are scheduled to take place in Xiamen (CHN) from November 13-15. UIPM will monitor the travel situation closely and discuss the matter with all relevant authorities in the coming months.

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “The past few weeks have been a difficult time for all involved in international sport, and our movement is no exception. We are very sorry that the Coronavirus outbreak has caused so much disruption and left us with no choice but to move our flagship annual competition away from China.

“We are, however, delighted that the City Government of Xiamen has agreed to postpone what I am certain will be an exemplary UIPM Pentathlon World Championships until the year 2022.

“We are equally grateful to our friends in Mexico, who have come to the aid of our global community with a wonderfully supportive gesture. In 2018 we enjoyed an historic UIPM Pentathlon World Championships in Mexico City, where the Pentathlon Stadium concept was brought to life, and now we are all looking forward to an exciting UIPM 2020 Pentathlon World Championships in Cancún.

“It was very important to provide our athletes with a World Championships at sea level, matching the conditions they will experience during the Olympic Summer Games Tokyo 2020. We are also grateful to the organisers of the UIPM 2020 Biathle/Triathle World Championships for agreeing to incorporate the Laser Run World Championships.

“I am pleased now that we can provide these assurances to our global community, minimising disruption to athletes, coaches, support teams and all other stakeholders during the most important year of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle.”

Guo Guirong, Deputy Mayor of the City Government of Xiamen, said: “We are thankful for the support and trust of UIPM and the international Pentathlon community in Xiamen.“Due to the Coronavirus, it’s a pity that our UIPM 2020 Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships in Xiamen, which was originally scheduled for May, needs to be postponed.

“We are confident that we will soon overcome the epidemic. In addition, Xiamen ranks first in China in terms of the effectiveness of the prevention and control of the epidemic.

“We look forward to hosting the UIPM 2020 Congress in November this year as planned. Xiamen looks forward to the arrival of UIPM friends and guests from all over the world.”

Ana Gabriela Guevara Espinosa, Mexico’s Sports Minister, added: “Mexico is proud to open its doors again to the international sports family, hosting the UIPM 2020 Pentathlon World Championships in May, prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games.

“Modern Pentathlon has always been important to Mexico and its athletes. We are looking forward to delivering another successful international event along with UIPM in the magnificent Cancún.”

NEW PENTATHLON AND NEW TETRATHLON PROPOSALS APPROVED BY UIPM EXECUTIVE BOARD

Dynamic new formats for Modern Pentathlon and Tetrathlon at future Olympic Games were given the seal of approval by the UIPM Executive Board (EB) today.

The EB voted unanimously to approve proposals from the New Pentathlon and New Tetrathlon YOG 2022 Working Groups designed to improve the presentation of the two UIPM Sports at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and Dakar 2022 Youth Olympic Games respectively.

The decisions came at the end of a two-day meeting at Olympic House, the new headquarters of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne (SUI), chaired by UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann.

The New Pentathlon concept, which includes an elimination system, will be subject to a rigorous examination with three or four test events to be scheduled in advance of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The New Tetrathlon format, details of which had already been widely circulated, will now be fully implemented subject to one final test event where the project will be finalised.

In late 2019 it was announced that the Modern Pentathlon event at Dakar 2022 would be increasing from a quota of 48 athletes to 64. The EB agreed today on a distribution system that is designed ensure proportionate continental representation.

The EB also made decisions relating to new member applications and future competitions. Applications from Croatia and North Macedonia to become provisional member federations of UIPM were approved, while competitions were awarded to the followingmember federations:
• Finland – UIPM 2022 Masters World Championships• Egypt – UIPM 2021 Junior World Championships

The EB also viewed presentations relating to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a proposed athlete nomination system for the UIPM Annual Awards and the ongoing development of UIPM e-sports. A UIPM eLaser Run game is scheduled to be released in 2020.

The EB summit in Lausanne (SUI) followed an intensive series of meetings from January 23-25 in Frankfurt (GER) that brought together the UIPM Athletes, Coaches and Technical Committees as well as the New Pentathlon and New Tetrathlon Working Groups.

On the first day of the meeting in Lausanne (SUI), The IOC President, Dr Thomas Bach, Vice-President Juan Antonio Samaranch, Director General Christophe de Kepper and Sport Director Kit McConnell all addressed the EB at the new IOC Headquarters.

Dr Bach made a speech and took part in a Q&A with UIPM’s most senior decision-making body at Olympic House. Mr Samaranch also addressed the EB, on which he sits as UIPM’s 1st Vice President, and Mr McConnell took part in a Q&A about the Olympic Summer Games programme for Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “We have had two days of very important discussions about the future presentation of our sport, especially in the future at the Youth Olympic Summer Games Dakar 2022 and Olympic Summer Games Paris 2024.

“It was a great honour for us that Dr Bach joined us for the meeting and we had a very interesting debate. Our Executive Board Members asked him questions and the IOC President provided a clear indication of which direction the IOC is going and also which direction International Federations should be going.

“I’m very happy that what was proposed in Frankfurt by the various UIPM Committees and Working Groups was accepted by the Executive Board. Now what we have that our Union is moving in the right direction for youths but also for the juniors and seniors who will be competing at future Olympic Games.

“I can say we have created a tradition now – we will come to Lausanne for meetings every second year. Visiting this building has touched us and we go home now with a wonderful experience and ready to move forward.”
Olympic House in Lausanne (SUI) was opened in 2019 and is designed to serve as a home for the entire global Olympic sports family, of which UIPM has been a part since its creation in 1948.
