GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS (GWR), the global authority on record-breaking achievements, has officially confirmed that professional footballer James Milner has achieved the Guinness World Records title for Most appearances in the English Premier League, after making his 654th appearance on 21 February 2026.
The previous record of 653 appearances was achieved by Gareth Barry (UK) from 2 May 1998 to 24 February 2018.
Milner, who currently plays for Brighton & Hove Albion, was presented with his official GWR certificate at a media event held at Brighton & Hove Albion’s training ground this afternoon, marking the historic milestone in front of invited media.
Over a remarkable career spanning more than two decades, Milner has represented Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, becoming one of the most respected and enduring figures in English football.
In addition to this milestone, Milner was also presented with certificates for two further GWR record titles recognising his extraordinary longevity in the competition:
- Most appearances in the English Premier League (654)
- The longest gap between first and last English Premier League (EPL) goals (22 years 248 days)
- Most consecutive English Premier League seasons played (24)
The trio of titles cements Milner’s place in Premier League history as one of its most consistent and long-serving competitors.
When asked what the achievement meant to him, Milner said:
“When I was younger, I used to get the Guinness World Records book for Christmas every year. So this is pretty amazing.”
Will Munford, Guinness World Records adjudicator, said:
“James Milner’s longevity at the very highest level of English football is nothing short of extraordinary. To make 654 appearances in one of the most competitive leagues in world football requires not only talent, but exceptional professionalism, resilience and dedication.
“GWR is proud to recognise James with three official titles that reflect both his consistency and his remarkable career span. His achievements truly embody what it means to be Officially Amazing.”
Milner first appeared in the Premier League in November 2002 and has competed across multiple eras of the modern game, winning league titles and earning widespread respect for his versatility and leadership.
Today’s presentation marks the official verification of the record achievement and welcomes Milner into the Guinness World Records family.
