Each week I share a round up of the biggest developments in women’s sport. I’m feeling particularly inspired this week by the extraordinary Emma Raducanu & Europe’s win in the Solheim Cup.
Here’s what else is exciting me. . .
BBC + SKY + WSL
A huge first for women’s sport last weekend as the Barclays FA WSL season kicked off with free to air coverage for the first time in a partnership with Sky Sports & the BBC. Viewing figures for first game on BBC set new records.
NBC + FEMALE TEAM
NBC Sports are making US television history this autumn with an all-women broadcast team for the LPGA Classic in October. The team includes Cara Banks, Judy Rankin, Paige MacKenzie, Karen Stupples and Kay Cockerill with Beth Hutter as producer.
GAME ON + PUBLICATION
This week saw the publication of my book ‘Game On: The Unstoppable Rise of Women’s Sport.’ Covering a wide range of topics from investment, media & fans through to issues such as race, LGBTQ and perceptions of femininity, I’m hoping it will be a must read for anyone interested in sport and its potential to impact equality in society. NWSL + RECORD ATTENDANCE
OL Reign v Portland Thorns set an NWSL record attendance when 27,248 fans watched the Reign’s 2-1 win on August 29th. The previous NWSL record stood at 25,218 for Portland Thorns’ 2-1 win over NC Courage in 2019.
AFLW + WORKPLAY
AFLW (the women’s Australian Football League) has launched a great new partnership with Workplay which links female athletes up with companies to enhance their career skills, networks and work experience.
SKY SPORTS + GOLF RIGHTS
Great to see Sky Sports marking 25 years of women’s golf coverage with a 3-year extension to its existing rights deals for both the LPGA & the Ladies European Tour (LET). The extension sees Sky Sports continue to be the home for all 5 women’s golf majors: KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Evian Championship, ANA Inspiration, US Women’s Open & AIG Women’s Open.
WBBL + WEBER
The Women’s Big Bash League in Australia has announced that Weber Barbecues will be its new naming rights partner. The League will be known as the Weber WBBL, with a finals series format to provide greater reward for the side finishing top of table. Weber will also become a supplier of the KFC Big Bash League.
