The Game Changers – new guests for series 10

I’m so excited to share details of season 10 of The Game Changers podcast.

THE GAME CHANGERS TO RECEIVE SPORT ENGLAND FUNDING

The Game Changers podcast, which celebrates trailblazing women in sport, is to receive Sport England National Lottery funding. 

The grant will enable the producers, Fearless Women Ltd, to broaden the reach of the inspirational content, as they continue to share the stories of women who have challenged the status quo for women and girls everywhere. 

“‘If you can’t see it, you can’t be it’ is a phrase we often hear in relation to female athletes” comments Sue Anstiss, host of the award-winning podcast and CEO of Fearless Women and the Women’s Sport Collective, “and the same is true for women across all sport.” 

“We know that sharing life stories and experiences of trailblazers can be hugely impactful whether that’s hearing about the journeys of Olympians, Paralympians and World Champions or the career paths of women working across sport including coaches and officials, broadcasters and CEOs. 

“In The Game Changers we get a glimpse into the lives of the most extraordinary women as they open up about the challenges they’ve faced and what they’ve learnt along the way.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson – When your role model becomes your biggest rival

Best known for her excellence both on the track and in the field as a multi-eventer Katarina Johnson-Thompson (KJT) is no stranger to success. At the tender age of 26, the two-time Olympian has impressive athletics career which includes her saw her crowned World Champion Heptathlete in Doha in 2019.

In this episode, Katarina talks about tackling anxiety and body issues, transforming her mental approach to the sport, learning to handle the pressure after losing the love of the sport and how she handled the internal conflict when her childhood role model, Jessica Ennis-Hill, became her biggest rival. Katarina also discusses the complicated preparations for the postponed Tokyo Olympics and being an ambassador of the Game On initiative, launched with Liverpool Football Club and Nike to help youngsters access sport in their local area.

Manisha Tailor: How role models can inspire South Asian women in sport

The first South Asian woman to coach in men’s professional football, Manisha started her career training as a primary headteacher. Motivated by her twin brother’s mental health breakdown and her role as a young carer, Manisha made the move into grassroots football.

She progressed through the game and was appointed as an academy coach at QPR. In 2017 she received an MBE for services to football and diversity in sport. Manisha is also the author of “50 Wellbeing Lessons for the Diverse Primary Classroom”, published by Routledge Education.

Jessica Creighton: How the media’s lack of diversity drives her to do more

An award-winning broadcaster and journalist, Jessica has worked in the sports industry for over a decade, for organisations including the BBC, BT Sport and TalkSPORT. Jessica now presents Sky Sports News and hosts the Women’s Football Show on Sky.

As a former football player, Jessica is committed to levelling the playing field and ensuring sport is accessible to marginalised communities.

Her chat show B is for: Black gave unique insight into the lives and experiences of black and mixed race women in sport. 

Jess talks about:

BOXING DAY TOAST ANNOUNCED FOR THE DICK, KERR’S LADIES IN CENTENARY CELEBRATION

People across the UK are invited to raise a glass to the Dick, Kerr’s Ladies at 3pm this Boxing Day, to mark 100 years since the team played in front of a crowd of 53,000 at Goodison Park on December 26, 1920.

The record-breaking event has particularly significance in the history of women’s sport. Not only did it clearly show there was a huge audience for the female game, but it was this popularity that drove the Football Association to ban women from playing on any of their pitches the following year. The impact of that decision is still felt today.

The initiative follows Gail Newsham’s interview on The Game Changers last month, an award-winning podcast which celebrates trailblazing women in sport. Gail talked about the cancellation of a huge centenary dinner she had planned at Preston North End to celebrate important date, along with her personal plans to mark the Boxing Day anniversary by taking wreaths to the graves of Lily Parr and Jessie Walmsley, who both played in the game.

Podcast host Sue Anstiss MBE says: “I was so moved by Gail’s story, and hearing more about the incredible crowds at Goodison Park on Boxing Day 1920, that it felt only right that we should try to mark this special anniversary. Sadly, we’re not able to come together this year, but I hope this virtual celebration will unite us all in memory of those extraordinary women.”

Gail Newsham, a recognised expert on the story of the Dick, Kerr’s Ladies, and author of the book about the team ‘In a League of Their Own’ says: “I was so happy to hear about Sue’s plans to mark this important game. Not only did 53,000 watch the Dick Kerr’s Ladies that day, but a further 14,000 came to Goodison Park to watch the women play but were unable to gain entry to the stadium.

“Some of the ladies that played for the team said they thought the FA banned them because they were jealous that they were getting bigger crowds than the men’s teams. 

“I do hope we can use this toast to help spread the word for the ladies. They were quite remarkable, going on to keep playing after the ban until 1965 and raising the equivalent of over £10 million for the war effort.”

The Game Changes podcast features British sailor Tracy Edwards MBE

The latest episode of The Game Changes podcast features British sailor Tracy Edwards MBE who made history when skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. 

Speaking to host Sue Anstiss MBE, Tracy discusses the challenges and triumphs she’s experienced throughout her life and career in sport. From overcoming seasickness to work on a Mediterranean charter yacht and getting expelled from school, right through to learning to navigate, being introduced to racing and making history on Maiden – the first all female boat to take part in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race.

Throughout the episode Tracy talks about the push back she and her team-mates faced as women taking on the race, the encouragement she received from her mentors, her mum in particular. And the mental struggles she faced after the race.
